Othognathic Surgery
jaw surgery
What is Orthognathic Surgery?
Orthognathic surgery (also called jaw surgery) is a procedure that repositions the jaws to improve the way they work and look.
Why is it Done?
This surgery may be recommended for:
- Difficulty biting, chewing, or swallowing
- Problems with speech
- Jaw pain or discomfort (including temporomandibular joint issues)
- Uneven wear of teeth
- Facial imbalance (e.g. small chin, open bite)
- Obstructive sleep apnoea in some patients

What Does Surgery Involve?
- The operation is carried out under general anaesthetic in hospital.
- Cuts are made inside the mouth (so scars are usually hidden).
- The jaws are moved into a new position and held with small plates and screws.
- Most patients stay in hospital for 2–5 days.
Before Surgery
- Orthodontic treatment (braces) is usually required for 12–24 months before surgery.
- You will have X-rays, scans, photographs, and dental models taken to plan the operation.
- Your surgeon and orthodontist will explain your individual plan.
Recovery After Surgery
- Initial swelling and discomfort are common and managed with pain relief.
- A soft or liquid diet is usually required for several weeks.
- Normal daily activities may resume in 2–3 weeks, but full healing can take 9–12 months.
- Regular follow-up visits are important to monitor healing and coordinate orthodontics.
Risks and Considerations
As with any surgery, there are risks. These may include:
- Swelling, bruising, temporary discomfort
- Numbness of the lips, chin, or cheeks (usually improves but may be permanent in some cases)
- Infection or bleeding
- Relapse or need for further surgery (rare)
Your surgeon will discuss these with you in detail.
